Best Time to Visit Egypt 2026: Month by Month Weather Guide

Best Time to Visit Egypt 2026

I learned this lesson the hard way.

My first trip to Egypt was in July. I stood in front of the Pyramids at noon. The sun was brutal. The heat was real. I loved every second – but I also promised myself I would come back in winter.

I did. And the difference was incredible. Pleasant temperatures. Cool evenings. Long, sunny days perfect for exploring.

The best time to visit Egypt depends on what you want. Temples without crowds? Lower prices? Perfect beach weather? This guide breaks down every month so you can choose your perfect window.

The Short Answer: When Should You Go?

October through April – This is the sweet spot.

During these months, temperatures are pleasant across the country. You can explore Luxor and Aswan without melting. You can walk through Cairo's streets comfortably. You can enjoy the Red Sea without burning.

But here's the secret: every season in Egypt has something wonderful to offer. Let me show you.

Egypt Weather Basics: What to Expect in Each Region

Egypt is not one climate. It's four. Here's what I experienced in each region during my travels:

Cairo and the Nile Delta

Mild winters (15-20°C / 59-68°F). Hot summers (30-35°C / 86-95°F). Spring and fall are perfect – warm days, cool nights. Winter evenings get chilly. Bring a jacket.

Luxor and Aswan (Upper Egypt)

This is where the heat lives. Summer days can reach 40°C+ (104°F+). But winter? December through February is glorious. 20-25°C (68-77°F). Sunny. Perfect for temple exploring.

Red Sea Resorts (Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam)

Almost perfect year-round. Summers are hot (35-40°C / 95-104°F) but dry. Winters are warm and sunny (20-25°C / 68-77°F). The water stays swimmable all year. This is where Egyptians go to escape winter cold.

Alexandria and the North Coast

Cooler and more humid. Summers are pleasant (25-30°C / 77-86°F). Winters are chilly (10-18°C / 50-64°F) and rainy. Best visited in summer or early fall.

Best Time to Visit Egypt: Month by Month Breakdown

Let me walk you through each month. I've visited in almost every season. Here's what to expect.

December – February (Winter)

The most popular time to visit Egypt. And for good reason.

Cairo: 15-20°C (59-68°F). Luxor: 20-25°C (68-77°F). The Red Sea: 20-23°C (68-73°F). This is prime temple and sightseeing weather. You won't sweat through your shirt. You won't need a heavy coat (just a jacket for evenings).

The trade-off? Crowds and prices. December through February is peak season. Hotels fill up. Prices rise. Book everything in advance – especially Nile cruises.

Best for: Sightseeing, temples, avoiding heat. Watch out for: Higher prices, more tourists.

March – April (Spring)

The sweet spot. March and April are wonderful.

Temperatures warm up without becoming uncomfortable. Cairo: 20-28°C (68-82°F). Luxor: 25-35°C (77-95°F). The Red Sea: 22-28°C (72-82°F).

Crowds thin out after the winter rush. Prices drop. The desert wildflowers bloom in some areas. This is when I recommend first-timers go.

Best for: Balance of good weather and fewer crowds. Watch out for: Late April can get warm in Luxor/Aswan.

May – September (Summer)

Hot. But not impossible.

Luxor and Aswan can reach 40-45°C (104-113°F) – that's serious heat. Cairo sits at 30-35°C (86-95°F). But here's what most people don't know: the Red Sea is gorgeous in summer. Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh have sea breezes that keep things comfortable.

And the crowds? Almost gone. You'll have temples and museums nearly to yourself. Hotels slash their prices. If you can handle heat (or stick to the coast), summer is a fantastic value.

Best for: Budget travelers, Red Sea beach holidays. Watch out for: Luxor and Aswan daytime heat.

October – November (Fall)

My personal favorite. October and November are perfect.

Summer heat fades. Winter crowds haven't arrived yet. The weather is ideal across the country. Cairo: 25-30°C (77-86°F). Luxor: 28-35°C (82-95°F). The Red Sea: 25-28°C (77-82°F).

Prices are still low. Temples are still uncrowded. The light is beautiful for photography. October is when I tell my friends to go.

Best for: Perfect weather + low crowds + good prices. Watch out for: Book early – this secret is getting out.

Egypt Travel Seasons: Peak, Shoulder, and Low

Understanding Egypt travel seasons helps you choose the right time for your budget and style.

Peak Season (December – February)

Best weather. Highest prices. Most crowds. Book everything 2-3 months in advance. Perfect for first-timers who want guaranteed good weather.

Shoulder Season (March – April & October – November)

Great weather. Lower prices. Fewer crowds. This is the value sweet spot. I recommend this for most travelers.

Low Season (May – September)

Best prices. Empty temples. Hot in Luxor/Aswan – beautiful on the Red Sea. Perfect for budget travelers or beach-focused trips.

Best Time to Visit Egypt for Specific Activities

Not everyone visits Egypt for the same reason. Here's the best time to visit Egypt based on what you want to do.

For Sightseeing (Pyramids, Temples, Museums)

October to April – Pleasant temperatures make exploring comfortable. You won't be exhausted by the heat. Morning light is perfect for photography. The only downside? More tourists at the main sites.

For the Red Sea (Diving, Snorkeling, Beaches)

March to November – Water temperatures are warm and pleasant. Visibility is excellent for diving. Summer months (July-September) are actually great here – sea breezes keep things comfortable. Winter (December-February) water is cooler but still swimmable.

For Desert Adventures (White Desert, Sinai, Siwa)

October to March – Desert camping is magical when nights are cool but not freezing. Summer desert heat is intense. Winter nights require warm sleeping bags. Spring and fall are ideal.

For Nile Cruises (Luxor to Aswan)

October to April – Most Nile cruises operate during these months. Winter is peak cruise season. The upper deck is comfortable. The temples along the way are at their best. Summer cruises exist but are less common – and much hotter.

For Budget Travel

May to September – Low season prices. Hotels drop their rates. Tour companies offer discounts. You can find amazing deals – but you'll need to tolerate heat, especially in Luxor and Aswan.

Special Events and Festivals in Egypt

Timing your visit with these events can make your trip even more memorable.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival (February 22 and October 22)

Twice a year, the sun aligns perfectly to illuminate the inner sanctuary of Ramesses II's temple. It's magical. Thousands gather. Book accommodation in Aswan months in advance.

Ramadan (Dates Vary – around March/April in 2026)

The Muslim holy month. Life slows down during the day. Nights come alive with feasts and celebrations. It's a unique cultural experience. Just know that some restaurants close during daylight hours. Plan accordingly.

Coptic Christmas (January 7)

Egypt's Christian community celebrates on January 7. Coptic Cairo is especially beautiful. Many Egyptians attend midnight mass. It's a meaningful time to visit the Coptic Museum and churches.

When NOT to Visit? (Honest Advice)

I don't like saying "don't go" – because every season has something wonderful. But here's my honest advice:

  • Avoid June-August in Luxor and Aswan if you hate heat. Temples are still open. Tours still run. But you'll be sweating. Early morning visits (6:00-9:00 AM) are the key.
  • Consider avoiding December if you hate crowds. The Pyramids and Karnak are packed. Prices are highest. Book everything far in advance.

That's it. Every other time is wonderful in its own way.

My Personal Recommendation for First-Timers

If you've never been to Egypt and you're asking me when to book your first trip, here's my answer:

October or November.

The summer heat has faded. The winter crowds haven't arrived. Prices are still reasonable. The weather is perfect everywhere – Cairo, Luxor, the Red Sea. The light is beautiful for photography. And you'll avoid the holiday rush.

October is my favorite month in Egypt. I've been twice in October. I'll probably go again.

Sample Itineraries by Season

Winter Itinerary (December-February)

Perfect for full-day sightseeing. You can spend all day outdoors comfortably. Great for Nile cruises. Book everything in advance.

Spring/Fall Itinerary (March-April, October-November)

Best of both worlds. Warm days, cool nights. Fewer crowds. Lower prices. This is when I recommend first-timers go.

Summer Itinerary (May-September)

Start your day at 6:00 AM. Finish by noon. Spend afternoons at the pool, in museums (air-conditioned), or on the Red Sea coast. Visit Luxor and Aswan early morning or late afternoon. It works – millions do it every year.

Still Not Sure? Ask Yourself These 3 Questions

  1. Can I handle heat? Yes → Summer is fine. No → Stick to October-April.
  2. Do I hate crowds? Yes → Avoid December-February. No → Winter is beautiful.
  3. Is budget my main concern? Yes → Go in summer or late spring. No → Shoulder seasons offer the best value.

Answer these three questions, and you'll know exactly when to visit Egypt.
